While the world is changing at a rapid pace, citizens’ ability to handle complexity and to manage their own career development become crucial. CAREERS AROUND ME is a new policy reform initiative aimed to help guidance providers make their services more impactful. To do so, a team of experts from 6 European countries is working in a social innovation experiment to develop resources and tools for promoting career management skills (CMS).

University of Camerino (UNICAM) is a ‘city campus university’ chartered in 1336, with about 600 staff, about 8,000 undergraduate students, and 180 PhD candidates , of which about 40% are international students. The University of Applied Labour Studies of the Federal Employment Agency (HdBA) (Hochschule der Bundesagentur für Arbeit) is a stateapproved University of applied labour science. It was founded in 2006 by the Federal Employment Agency, Germany`s largest provider of labour market services. Apart from offering bachelor and master degree courses, the HdBA is focusing on research has been involved in research on national and International level. Moreover, the HdBA offers in-service training for employees of the Federal Employment Agency and other stakeholders in the field of labour market, vocational and educational training and career counseling.
The HdBA offers bachelor degree courses to approximately 900 students per year that qualify for labour market oriented professions. In two-degree programs the HdBA provides a unique multidisciplinary combination of courses in economics, social sciences and law: The Labor Market Management program prepares students for work in employment agencies in the areas of placement and integration, maintenance of benefits and management of resources. The Career Guidance and Case Management program prepares students for work in career guidance and orientation, as well as work concerning career related case management.
The dual education system at the HdBA is characterized by a consistent practice-based orientation. This is ensured through internships e.g. in employment agencies, job centers, chambers, enterprises or abroad. Skills acquired in the degree programmes of the HdBA qualify graduates not only for working for the Federal Employment Agency itself but also in leading positions in municipalities, nonprofit and private funders, which play a central role in implementing labor market policies, as well as staffing agencies.
The HdBA is focusing on applied research in the fields of career counseling and guidance, job and training placement and other labour market related topics, both on national and International level.
One unique characteristic of research at the HdBA is its proximity to practical-oriented issues related to career guidance and counseling. Apart from providing high quality state-of-the-art research outcomes themselves, research at the HdBA aims to provide the scientific basis for the HdBA’s degree programmes and study modules. Due to proximity to the Federal Employment Agency, its more than 150 employment agencies and approximately 600 branches as well as the more than 300 job centres, the HdBA enjoys a privileged access to practice. This promotes transfer of knowledge into two directions: from the HdBA into practice (e.g. by means of the degree programmes and inservice training provided by the HdBA) as well as from practice back to the HdBA (e.g. my means of exchange of experience with or questionings of staff from employment agencies). Another unique characteristic of research at the HdBA is its multidisciplinary team that pools the expertise and high scientific competence of a team of 49 professors from the fields of social sciences, economics, and law.
Due to its broad multidisciplinary approach the HdBA covers a wide range of topics related to career guidance and counselling for VET and labour market opportunities, prevention of dropout in VET, long term unemployed, working with young people with special risk, inclusion and employability of (young) people with fewer opportunities, including NEETs, diagnostic and counselling people with disabilities, with special educational needs, management of transversal competences, youth unemployment, labour markets and demographic change, work-based learning, assessment of skills and competences related to VET and labour market, cooperation between VET and the world of work, initial and continuous training of VET teachers, trainers, tutors and VET institution managers, transparency and recognition of learning outcomes and qualifications, diversity management and many further topics. The HdBA provides a high-quality, flexible and up-to-date offering of further education to the employees of the Federal Employment Agency. To a high degree events aiming at the transfer of knowledge into practice is realized in close cooperation with employment agencies, job centers, trade unions, employers' association, enterprises or vocational schools. Between September 2017 and July 2018 the HdBA hosted more than 300 further education events, in-service trainings and conferences.
